Jet pension Patara, Turkey

The Weather in Patara

Patara is situated on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey between Fethiye and Kalkan. This region celebrates the most settled weather on this coastline and in fact across the whole Mediterranean. Winters are short and mild and summers long and hot guaranteeing blue skies pretty much all year round. July and August are the hottest months with temperatures reaching as high as the mid 40`s at time.

For the more active April to June and September to November are more clement for walking and exploring the local area.

Why is Patara so Special?

Patara has all the beauty of a simple hardworking Turkish village, which is full of small, locally run, friendly restaurants, bars and pensions in the summertime. It is an informal place where friendships between the locals and visitors are easily formed resulting in visitors returning year after year to see old friends.

Patara has always been popular to the small number of tourists who have discovered its 18km beach of fine sand. It has slowly gained in popularity, Patara beach has been voted as one of the best beaches in the world in 2005. It also a nesting ground for sea turtles.

Recently the ever shifting sands have revealed the oldest lighthouse in the world. Patara is thought to be one of the largest archaeological sites, larger than Ephesus and has a fine amphitheatre, old Roman baths, triumphal gate and many Lycian tombs scattered throughout the area. St Nicholas was born in Patara (we know him as Santa Claus) and many of the Christian saints changes ship in the port of Patara which was once the main trading port for the region.

Activities nearby

The pension is only 3 kms from Patara beach, one of the most beautiful and unspoilt beaches in the world which forms part of the Patara National Park, together with the impressive sand dunes and pine forest. The beach has a café and bar as well as offering umbrellas and sun beds for rental

There a wealth of activities on your doorstep.

Patara National Park can be explored by horse back or canoeing or for the more active explore ancient trails by quad bike. Walking is an excellent way to explore the vast ruins of Patara or trek the famous ancient Lycian way.

The old Greek fishing village of Kalkan is just 4 miles away and hosts an array of fabulous restaurants and a wealth of water activities. You can be close to the hustle and bustle of Kalkan but far enough way to be left in splendid isolation. We recommend Coast restaurant offering a fabulous menu choice including Turkish dishes as well as Thai, French and Mexican dishes all cooked using authentic ingredients

You can visit Greece too by taking an island hop to visit Kastellorizo, one of the smallest Greek islands (only a 20 min boat journey from Kas). There are hidden and relatively untraversed hot spring caverns near Tlos (20 mins away ) and Saklikent Gorge is only 15 minutes away, great for exploring.

Patara is on a prime bus route and dolmuses (buses) run daily to and from Patara to Fethiye, Kalkan and the surrounding villages. Local taxis are also available and as a licensed taxi driver, Jet is more then happy to transport you to your desired location including visiting the local fruit and vegetable markets as well as taking you to one off events including camel racing and traditional oil wrestling events held in surrounding villages.
